Synthetic Oil vs Regular Oil

Synthetic Oil vs Regular Oil

Although this video was made in reference to automotive engines, I believe it is just as applicable toward the the twin motorcycle engine.

Opinion of video author: Synthetic motor oil has different flow characteristics and can actually cause your engine to leak oil and run noisy. It’s perfectly OK to run conventional oil of the correct viscosity and change it on a regular basis. You don’t need to spend the extra money on synthetic oil if your owners manual does not call for it.

Another motor oil opinion: I was told by a mechanic that there were properties within the synthetic oils that allowed it to stay on the engine parts longer regardless of viscosity. The benefit of this was that an engine that wasn’t run for several days would still have some lubricant on the moving parts when started rather than being dry until the oil pump pumped oil to the moving parts. ( Maybe 1/2 second without lubrication?) That 1/2 second was reason enough to use synthetic. Can that be confirmed?

This video is outdated information. It’s correct for OLD, poorly maintained, high mileage engines. He is expressing his opinion. If you have a good engine, want it to last, then synthetic is the choice. If your driving junk and don’t care about such things then save your money.
It’s 100% synthetic or nothing, blends have no regulations as to what is considered a blend oil. Plus, old school petroleum oils used in high temperature turbocharged engine applications can cause sludge to build up, whereas synthetic oils are the exact opposite and resist sludge build up far better.  Yes, synthetic oils have a much, much higher tolerance to heat than old school petroleum oils do.

Bottom line for me, is that I have been using synthetic oil in my 2006 American Ironhorse Texas Chopper and will continue to do so. I use synthetic oil not only in the motor, but, in the primary drive and also synthetic gear oil in the six speed transmission.
