March 25, 2010, a group of motorcyclists at the intersection were hit from behind by a large sanitation dump truck that was eastbound on Carefree Highway. A total of eight motorcycles and five vehicles were involved in the collision. The scene became even more horrific when the dump truck exploded into flames, trapping three of the motorcycle riders underneath.

Many non-motorcycle riders have commented to me of how dangerous it is to ride a motorcycle. Well, personally, for me, any sport that provides real exhilaration can be dangerous. Sure, if you want to be totally safe maybe you should just stay in your house and only own one of those military like SUVs for transportation.

But, in another sense, I do agree that motorcycle riding can be very dangerous. But like with any other sport you have to participate in the safest possible manner and with the best equipment to lessen the risks.

With that said, I must say that the majority of non-motorcycle riders believe that the risky part of motorcycling is driving down the highway at 65 miles an hour, or splitting lanes in slow-moving traffic. For me personally,(as this video depicts)the most dangerous aspect of motorcycle riding is being stopped at a light on a highway offramp or for that matter, just a stop sign on a busy street.

Even though California has strict regulations against using a cell phone while driving (except for hands-free operation) when I got back in the motorcycling last year here in San Diego, I was amazed at how many drivers I saw on the local highways holding their cell phone in one hand and driving with the other. Now, I’m not even talking about the ones that text and drive.

So, besides DUI drivers, the modern-day hazard is distracted cell phone drivers and perhaps soon drivers under the influence of medical marijuana. Because of the maneuverability of a motorcycle, I personally feel I’m safer at highway speeds than being stopped at a stop sign or red light where I’m virtually a sitting duck for a distracted driver.

It would be interesting to see stats on how many motorcycle accidents are not the riders fault, but caused my inattentive car/truck drivers.

Be careful riding a motorcycle & always have insurance. Progressive was the cheapest for me.The price will denped on your age, how many CCs your bike is, the make, year, and model of your bike, your driving record, and in some cases your credit. And if you financed the bike, you are going to have to have full coverage on the bike which isn’t cheap for anyone that owns a sportbike. If you paid cash, you can hold liability which will be drastically cheaper.I’m 18, I’m on my own policy, I have an ’08 R1 and liability was $41 per month for me. Full coverage was $390 per month. Yeah, f them I know. lol But also try other smaller local companies in your area.
