American Ironhorse Motorcycles

The American Ironhorse Texas Chopper and and the Big Dog K-9 motorcycle are my two favorite factory custom motorcycles. Personally, I don’t think there’s a better factory custom chopper than the Texas Chopper or the Big Dog K-9!

The Texas chopper was the flagship of the American Ironhorse line of custom motorcycles. I’ve owned a number of them, starting with the 2004 and ending with a 2006. As I said before the Texas chopper and the Big Dog K-9 are my favorite motorcycles! Currently I’m riding a 2017 Big Dog K-9 with 117 in.³ S&S engine.

Both the Texas Chopper and the Big Dog K-9 are head turner’s where ever they go. The Texas Chopper came with three engine choices, all S&S engines starting at 111, 117 and the 124 in.³. The Big Dog K-9 came with the S&S 117 inch engine and when they went back into business the K-9 was upgraded to the S&S 124 inch engine.

Both these beautiful choppers are over 9 feet long, and to me, are powerful, sleek, works of rolling art. The truth is, you can go out and buy a new Harley for probably somewhere in the $30,000 too low $40,000 range and it would still not generate the looks of a well-maintained Texas chopper or Big Dog K-9 if they are parked next to your brand-new bike!

American Ironhorse Motorcycles

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

American IronHorse was an American motorcycle manufacturer based in the Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas area that was founded in 1995 by Tim Edmondson and Bill Rucker. At one time, AIH was the largest factory producer of custom motorcycles in the USA. Their 224,000-square-foot (20,800 m2) factory was located in Fort Worth, Texas, and housed the complete manufacturing process under a single roof. Although most (305) parts for the bikes were made in-house, such as the seats and wheels, all American Ironhorse motorcycles were built with S&S engines and were assembled in-house. In Spring 2008, American Ironhorse ceased production on all motorcycles and most company assets were liquidated at auction.

Following Bill Rucker’s departure, AIH had a succession of CEOs and Tim Edmondson, President, the second largest shareholder and director of design sold his ownership in the company the following year. Buck Hendricson, who oversaw the company’s second bankruptcy, also guided the firm through its sale to Textron Inc, who subsequently liquidated the company in 2008.
