Important Things to Know Before Buying a Big Dog Motorcycle.

When you are looking at buying a different motorcycle and you think about a Big Dog Motorcycle. Here are a few items you will need to know before you make that purchase.

First off, the prices on these very wildly. You can get one that needs everything replaced, but you can hear it run. You can expect to pay about 8k or so for that level. The more “proper” after market goodies on it, can make the price on these hit 12K to $15K.

What are “proper” after market goodies you ask, well here is a list.

*The ESC and wiring from the factory is garbage. If you want a great running and starting bike, you will need to install a completely new computer and wiring harness at a cost of $835. You can expect to pay another $500 to have it installed – if you can find someone that is willing to work on it. Most bike repair shops refuse to work on Big Dog Motorcycles (BDM). So if you end up doing this yourself you can expect it to take 5 to 7 hours.

*Next is the that back tire. It is a pain in the butt to get these motorcycles to turn when going through corners. They have a 300 series tire on them and they cost $500 to replace that back tire. And you will need to replace it every 7K to 10K miles.

*The third thing is that factory starter. This specific bike still have the factory starter on it (it has been rebuild). However, the factory starter on these bike do not have enough torque to turn the bike over. And most of the time you will either get a clickclickclickclcick sound or it just not turn over at all. A high torque starter runs $600 and they are fairly easy to change out.

*The fourth thing to be aware of is the factory Speedo. They die out often. I have not seen a working factory speedo for some time. Most people change them over to Dakota Digital Dash. They are awesome, the down side is most people do not adjust the mileage so the miles on the motor is usually higher than what the speedo states.

*The fifth is the Clutch. If you have never rode a bike with a manual clutch, please make sure you at least ride any bike with a manual clutch before considering a Big Dog. The clutch is so hard to pull in, it takes most of the fun out from riding this bike.

*The sixth item is the Head Gasket, you MUST let these bikes warm up. You CANNOT just jump on and go for a ride. Lesson learned, I fired up my old one, went out for a quick spin, gunned it out the driveway and pop went the head gasket. They must sit for five minutes running before you jump on to ride.

*The last thing to know is POWER, you will need to keep the bike on trickle charge ALL THE TIME. We installed a new battery, and it will be dead with in two days if its not on trickle charger.

*The upside are these are GREAT looking bikes and you will get complements everywhere you go. Even die hard Harley riders will give you thumbs up. *They have GREAT power, once you get this puppy moving, there is not much to stop it. They actually are fun to ride, just make sure you go slow in corners.
